Three Things God Can’t Do

 

  1. God Cannot Act Against His Nature
    1. God cannot lie. – Titus 1.2; Hebrews 6.16-18; Numbers 23.19
    2. God cannot forget His Promises.
      1. God has a history of fulfilling promises – Joshua 23:14; Psalm 27.1-3
      2. We can have hope since He who promised is faithful. – Hebrews 10:23
      3. Jesus’ delayed return isn’t a failed promise. Instead, He is patient. – 2 Peter 3.3-9
      4. God ALWAYS keeps His promises. – Deuteronomy 7.9
    3. God does not change. – Malachi 3.6; James 1.17; Psalm 102.25-27
      1. Even if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.
         – 2 Timothy 2.13
      2. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever. – Hebrews 13.8
    4. Application – We can trust in God.
      1. In His promises to hear, protect & save, and in the return of Jesus.
      2. In His promises to punish evil doers.
         
  2. God Cannot Forgive Without Atonement
    1. God cannot condone sin because He is pure and holy.
      1. God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in Him. – 1 John 1.5
      2. You [God’s] eyes are too pure to look on evil, and you cannot tolerate wrongdoing. – Habakkuk 1.13
      3. He cannot be tempted by evil. – James 1.13
    2. God cannot be unfair because He is a just judge.
      1. A faithful God, without bias, he is righteous and true. – Deuteronomy 32.3-4
      2. For the Lord to be fair, all sin must be punished.
        1. He will not leave the guilty unpunished. – Exodus 34.6-7 
        2. The wages of sin is death. – Romans 6.23
    3. Jesus is the atoning sacrifice who takes away sin. – John 1.29
      1. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. – Hebrews 9:22
      2. But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities … the LORD has punished him for the iniquity of us all. – Isaiah 53:5-6 
      3. Jesus is both just and the justifier to those who have faith. – Romans 3.35-36
    4. Application
      1. I cannot earn salvation through effort, works, or merit because of my sin.
      2. Submissive faith in Jesus is the only way to be saved.
      3. I need to be humble both before God and others.

 

 

  1. God Cannot Love You More Than He Already Does
    1. God loves us because that is who He is. – 1 John 4.7-8; John 3.16
    2. We do not deserve God’s love because of sin.
      1. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. – Romans 3.23
      2. Sin separates us from God – Isaiah 59.2
      3. But God loves us despite how we have treated Him. – Romans 5.6-8
    3. God cannot give a more precious gift than Jesus.
      1. We were dead in sin, but God made us alive by grace. – Ephesians 2.1, 4-5
      2. Nothing is “able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8.38-39   
      3. There will never be a new “New Testament.” Jesus is the only solution.
        1. We have been given “everything required for life and godliness” – 2 Pet 1.3
        2. There will never be a new way to be saved other than Jesus. – Hebrews 6.4-6
        3. If we deliberately sin, Jesus’ sacrifice no longer applies to us.– Heb 10.26-27
    4. Application
      1. We can know we are valued and loved because of the price that was paid.
      2. If we say we are a Christian, but continue in deliberate sin, we spurn the love of Jesus. – Matthew 7.21-23
      3. If we turn against Jesus, there will never be a better gift offered to us.
