 He Called it Nehushtan

2 Kings 18:4  He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake that Moses made, for until then the Israelites were burning incense to it. It was called Nehushtan.
 

  1. The Story of the Bronze Serpent  
    1. A blessing of God – Numbers 21.5-9
      1. The people complain.
      2. God uses serpents to show the seriousness of sin.
      3. The people repent & God offers mercy.
    2. A tool for obedience – Numbers 21.8-9; John 3.14-16
      1. If the people act in faith, they were saved.
      2. In the same way, if people believe in Jesus, they can be saved – John 3.14-16
    3. Made into an idol – 2 Kings 18.1-4
      1. The people were burning incense to it.
      2. Too much value was placed on this item that was originally used for good.
    4. Called Nehushtan, a piece of bronze – 2 Kings 18.4
      1. More of a hinderance than a help.
      2. Anything can become “nehushtan” if we trust/value it too highly.
