Introduction
- The word “Christ” is not Jesus’ last name. It is a title.
- Chr?stós (Greek) means “Anointed One” (483x in the NT)
- Messiah (Greek transliteration of Hebrew) = “One who is anointed” (53x in the NT)
- Anoint/anointed/anointing (149x in the Bible)
- Anointed people, places, & objects from Genesis to Revelation & are models of Jesus THE Anointed One.
- “CHRISTians” need to understand what it means to be “anointed.”

- The Meaning of being Anointed
- Jacob’s Stone at Bethel – Genesis 28.10-22
- Jacob had been blessed by Isaac and fled from Esau to go toward Haran.
- Jacob has a dream of a ladder with angels ascending and descending.
- Jacob pours oil on the stone and calls the place “House of God” (Bethel)
- A connection point between Heaven & earth.
- Designated as special, sacred, & holy.
- Given a special purpose to serve the as an ambassador for the Lord – Isa 61.1-2
- Special recipe for anointing oil given to Moses on Saini – Exodus 30.22-25
- Myrrh (fragrant liquid tree sap), cinnamon, fragrant cane, & cassia (aromatic bark)
- Mixed with olive oil.
- Plant (garden)-based liquid that is holy. – Exodus 30.31-33
- Jacob’s Stone at Bethel – Genesis 28.10-22
- Old Testament Models of Anointed
- Creation & the Garden of Eden – Genesis 2.4-10
- “Anointed” with water & Spirit.
- Brings a garden full of life out of the wilderness.
- Filled with the presence of God.
- A special, fragrant garden that connects God & mankind.
- God uses a human to steward & care for the garden on God’s behalf. – 2.15
- Filled with God’s breath (Spirit)
- Made in the image of God to be God’s presence on earth.
- Adam rejects God’s purpose
- Sin/Death separates man from God & His garden.
- God promises a day would come that God’s Spirit would again be “poured”
on all humanity. – Joel 2.28-29; Isaiah 44.2-4
- “Anointed” with water & Spirit.
- The Tabernacle – Exodus 30.26-33
- Set apart as a special dwelling place for God among His people.
- Another connection point between Heaven and God’s people.
- Priests, Prophets, & Kings
- Aaron & sons as priests – Exodus 28.41
- Elisha as a prophet – 1 Kings 19.16, 19
- Saul, David, & other kings
- Creation & the Garden of Eden – Genesis 2.4-10
- The Prophesied Christ
- Not a last name, but a title. – Mark 8.27-29; John 1.40-41
- Isaiah’s Anointed One – Isaiah 11.1-4; 42.1-3, 6-7; 50; 53; Luke 4.16-19
- Jesus is THE Anointed Priest, Prophet, & King – Luke 24.25-27
- The Anointed Christians
- We are anointed at baptism (by water & Spirit) – John 3.1-5; Acts 2.38
- We bear his title.
- To be models of Jesus – Galatians 2.20
- To point others to Jesus by how we treat each other – John 13.34-35; Psalm 133.1-3
- To glorify God by the way we live – 1 Peter 2.9-12
- Remember who you are. – 1 Peter 4.14-16; 1 Corinthians 6.15, 20
