Themes of the Bible #4: Anointing

Introduction

    1. The word “Christ” is not Jesus’ last name. It is a title.
      1. Chr?stós (Greek) means “Anointed One” (483x in the NT)
      2. Messiah (Greek transliteration of Hebrew) = “One who is anointed” (53x in the NT)
      3. Anoint/anointed/anointing (149x in the Bible)
    2. Anointed people, places, & objects from Genesis to Revelation & are models of Jesus THE Anointed One.
    3. “CHRISTians” need to understand what it means to be “anointed.”
       
  1. The Meaning of being Anointed
    1. Jacob’s Stone at Bethel – Genesis 28.10-22
      1. Jacob had been blessed by Isaac and fled from Esau to go toward Haran.
      2. Jacob has a dream of a ladder with angels ascending and descending.
      3. Jacob pours oil on the stone and calls the place “House of God” (Bethel)
    2. A connection point between Heaven & earth.
    3. Designated as special, sacred, & holy.
      1. Given a special purpose to serve the as an ambassador for the Lord – Isa 61.1-2
      2. Special recipe for anointing oil given to Moses on Saini – Exodus 30.22-25
        1. Myrrh (fragrant liquid tree sap), cinnamon, fragrant cane, & cassia (aromatic bark)
        2. Mixed with olive oil.
        3. Plant (garden)-based liquid that is holy. – Exodus 30.31-33
           
  2. Old Testament Models of Anointed
    1. Creation & the Garden of Eden – Genesis 2.4-10
      1. “Anointed” with water & Spirit.
        1. Brings a garden full of life out of the wilderness.
        2. Filled with the presence of God.
      2. A special, fragrant garden that connects God & mankind.
      3. God uses a human to steward & care for the garden on God’s behalf. – 2.15
        1. Filled with God’s breath (Spirit)
        2. Made in the image of God to be God’s presence on earth.
      4. Adam rejects God’s purpose
        1. Sin/Death separates man from God & His garden.
        2. God promises a day would come that God’s Spirit would again be “poured”
          on all humanity. – Joel 2.28-29; Isaiah 44.2-4

           
    2. The Tabernacle – Exodus 30.26-33
      1. Set apart as a special dwelling place for God among His people.
      2. Another connection point between Heaven and God’s people.
    3. Priests, Prophets, & Kings
      1. Aaron & sons as priests – Exodus 28.41
      2. Elisha as a prophet – 1 Kings 19.16, 19
      3. Saul, David, & other kings  

 

  1. The Prophesied Christ
    1. Not a last name, but a title. – Mark 8.27-29; John 1.40-41
    2. Isaiah’s Anointed One – Isaiah 11.1-4; 42.1-3, 6-7; 50; 53; Luke 4.16-19
    3. Jesus is THE Anointed Priest, Prophet, & King – Luke 24.25-27

 

  1. The Anointed Christians
    1. We are anointed at baptism (by water & Spirit) – John 3.1-5; Acts 2.38
    2. We bear his title.
      1. To be models of Jesus – Galatians 2.20
      2. To point others to Jesus by how we treat each other – John 13.34-35; Psalm 133.1-3
      3. To glorify God by the way we live – 1 Peter 2.9-12
    3. Remember who you are. – 1 Peter 4.14-16; 1 Corinthians 6.15, 20
